Can’t workaholism be cured and must be endured?

Section: Psychiatry and psychology

We’re living in the years of strong competition. Sometimes it can lead to a serious problem, workaholism.

…” Michiro A, 45, mother of two, came home after work one day, slept and died. She had no husband and had to work overtime. She thought that this was the only way to solve money problem but she earned enough to pay the needs without overworking”…

… “ Alex S.D., 36, got a new girlfriend and recognized that he got male problems because he did not have any sex more than a year and worked overtime. When he tried to make love with his girlfriend he couldn’t help thinking about a new project”…

…” Donovan B. S., 48, a father of three children, lost his little son because of workaholism. The wife left their son at home and went to shop. Donovan began working though it was Sunday. The son slipped and fell down to clothes. He could not get out and cried but father didn’t pay attention to it. He thought the baby only cried like the other babies always do. Donovan concentrated at work because it was necessary for him to control everything even at weekend. His son died of asphyxia. When wife came back it was a real tragedy”…

More and more nations become workaholic. The first place is given to Japan which has the special type of workaholism, kar?shi. Kar?shi is the sudden death of overworking. Many families took proceedings against companies in which their fathers and mothers worked and died. There is a wide range of social programs helping people to solve this problem.

The other countries with great workaholic problems are: Peru, Great Britain, Pakistan, South Korea, The USA, Switzerland, Australia. The USA has even a special twelve-step program called Workaholic Anonymous.

History also knows many individuals who suffered from workaholism. For example, famous Japanese writer Ry?nosuke Akutagawa and William Shakespeare had this disorder.

Like alcoholics deny they have a problem, the workaholics think they just love to work. But, nevertheless, workaholism is a serious nervous illness. The workaholics depend on the work they do because they had a lot of adrenalin and endorphins while carrying out tasks. The similar process can be seen in drug addiction.

That’s why workaholism is a serious problem. The difficulty of curing workaholism is that the workaholic people don’t really think they’re sick. There are several origins of workaholics, or, more exactly, why people became so. They are:
• The people, who were grown up in unhappy families in which fathers were drunkards. They think the only way not to have the life they used to have is working all days.

• The people who were brought up by faultfinding mothers also became workaholics. Once they did their best to please mother and can’t stop now.

• The people who were badly treated at school by teachers or students, or both. Now they try to self-assert.

• The people who had or have problems with private life. The cases can vary from problems with wife and children (work can help to forget about them) to early problems with sex partners concerning money.

• The people with the sense of competition with the other co-workers they want to control everything at office and make work perfect.

• The people who think they’re good only while working.

It’s hard to persuade workaholic that he has problems. Sometimes stories like above can have an influence on them but very often they think it can happen to everyone but them.

There are several ways to manage workaholism:
• Yoga helps to pay attention to different abstract objects and relax before and after work. This will help manage stress situations at office and, accordingly, have less heart and nervous disorders.

• You should visit psychologist who can help manage the problem and work out special anti-workaholic program.

• Your nutrition ration must include maximum vegetables and fruits and practically no caffeine.

• You can have a special hobby which can help you to concentrate at relaxing objects like puzzles. The puzzles give you a possibility to control the situation but without stress and breath problems.

• You should have biomarker of fatigue or a gadget something like this. Such devices have been worked out especially for workaholics.

• You should take attention to your children and their achievements; try to feel pleasure of connecting with people.

• You can take an active kind of vacation. Many workaholics can’t stand a “vacation” word because this is associated with relaxation. An active vacation can ruin this stereotype.

• The greatest percentage of workaholics is among programmers. If you’re a programmer you can take a vacation on the desert island and have actions like all-terrain vehicle driving.

• Buy some fishes and take care of them if your workaholism concerned the lack of private life.

• Date with another workaholic and try to understand his/her mistakes from the outside.

To be a fan of your business is cool, but to destroy life due to psychology disorder is terrible. Take care of yourselves and your families.
